I build things, and I keep the receipts.
I’m Carlos Morales Jr. I’m Puerto Rican, I live in Tucson, and I’ve been an electrical engineer in aerospace and defense since 2021: test, reliability, technical risk. It’s the corner of engineering where “probably right” isn’t an answer. That’s also all you’ll read about my day job here.
At night I build software. For about a year that happened under a studio name, Morales Labs: a salsa timing trainer, an estimating app for contractors, spreadsheet systems for home bakers and pet sitters, a tool that reads store reviews and cites its sources, a finance copilot that has to show where every number came from. In September 2026 I finally shipped. Four products went live on Etsy and Gumroad. Nobody bought anything. I wrote about that too.
I write because it’s how I figure out what I think. The pieces start from something that actually happened: a run, a bug at 1:43 in the morning, a number that came back zero. The newsletter version is Carlos Builds, and this site is where all of it lives permanently.
Outside the screen: I run far on purpose. On my birthday I run my age in miles; this June that was 29.39. I dance salsa, and I care way too much about where the 1 is. That’s why SalsaCoach exists. I speak English and Spanish.
